I certainly cannot anticipate all of the ramifications from rapid growth of Artificial Intelligence, but we all know it will be significant. It seems to me that with AI, the apparent difference between someone who is smart and very smart (or maybe even brilliant) will diminish, as hard knowledge will become less and less important. And, in my opinion, what will become even more important is Social Emotional Intelligence- cooperation, empathy, compassion, sympathy, understanding, sense of humor, listening, being part of a team. In short, the GLUE that holds groups together.
Camp provides GREAT opportunities to learn and fine-tune these skills. I can think of no better place to hone Social Emotional Intelligence than at camp, where one learns to live and play together with others.
I believe this happens best at sleepaway camp (more than day camp), where kids live in shared spaces. And, I believe this happens in longer sleepaway sessions (more than short ones), where kids build enduring relationships that have time to adjust to the ups and downs of a summer. And, most importantly, I believe this happens at Brant Lake Camp more than anywhere else, where our unmatched experience and number of Key Staff help each boy to develop their interpersonal skills in a loving and fun environment.
